A Study on Measuring Techniques of Phase Velocities of Surface Acoustic Waves

The phase velocities of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) determined by simply measuring the phase characteristics of SAW devices are not accurate. One of the error facters is the nonlinearity of the phase characteristics of SAW devices due to the interdigital transducers (IDTs). The phase velocities have been determined from direct or indirect phase measurements of IDTs. Correction is made for those velocities by using Smith's equivalent circuit of the IDT in order to eliminate the errors. This method is as accurate as Hirabayashi's method, which is designed to cancel the nonlinear effect of IDTs. Moreover, it is simpler than the conventional method since it does not require special IDTs or additional circuits.
