Rectangular AT-cut quartz resonators with cylindrical capsules meet the requirement for downsizing of the dimensions in quartz crystal resonators. But it was found that unfavorable vibration characteristics occurred when they were used at high drive levels. We analyzed the vibration data and clarified that the causes were due to the different types of vibrational couplings of the X-dimension dependent spurious modes. Considerations for optimal design were determined as a result.
