Comprehensive Studies on a Photoinitiated H_2/F_2 Laser Using Atmospheric Gas Mixtures with O_2 Inhibitor

• Theoretical calculations have been made of practical performance characteristics of an atmospheric, photo-initiated H_2/F_2 laser with O_2 inhibitor, under various operating parameters (concentration, component ratio, and total gas pressure) which had been used in the experiment previously reported. These were compared with the experimental results. The calculated results are in good agreement with the extensive experimental data available. The effects of the O_2 inhibitor on the HF laser output have been specially investigated in this paper. The decrease in HF laser output energy in the high-pressure region of over 1 atm of total gas mixture has been explained in terms of the competition between quenchins reactions by O_2 and H_2/F_2 pumping chain reactions under weak initiation.
