Axial Electric Field of a Positive Column in a Transverse Magnetic Field

The axial electric field of a positive column is increased by increasing a transverse magnetic field. In this paper, this effect is studied for helium, neon and argon. The gas pressure is varied from 0.3 to 10.0 Torr. The transverse magnetic field is changed from 0 to 500 Gauss. It is found that the axial electric field is increased with the increase of the transverse magnetic field and that this effect is more remarkable under low gas pressure. The experimental values of the axial electric field are compared with a modified theory of an axial electric field with the diffusion loss of electrons to the wall, and qualitative agreements are obtained.
