MCP-Na is very effective for the control of perennial weeds in paddy fields. The experiments were carried out in 1974〜1976 to clarify the effect of the time of MCP-Na application on growth and yields of rice. MCP-Na was applied at the rate of 5 or 10g/a, at 5〜11 different stages of rice, from 60 to 5 days before heading. The results are summarised as follows : 1) The number of ears per hill was reduced by the application of 50-30 days before heading, but was not affected by the later application. The number of grains per ear decreased at all the stages of application, especialy at the stage of 20 days before heading. 2) The number of grains per unit area was reduced by MCP-Na application of all treated stages. However, the application of 50〜30 days before heading did not reduce the yield owing to the compensation of the percentage of ripened grains and 1,000-kernel weight The application of 20〜5 days before heading reduced the yields by about 10〜50%, because of the remarkable reduction of grains per ear. 3) For the control of perennial weeds without the damage to rice plants in paddy fields, it is recommended to apply MCP-Na at the rate of 5g/a, from 50〜30 days before heading.
