A ZnS:Mn single crystal phosphor layer is prepared on a Si(111) substrate by EB-evaporation. AC-Electroluminescent (EL) cells having this ZnS:Mn single crystal phosphor layer have been shown to have a lower threshold voltage than AC-EL cells having a polycrystal phosphor layer on glass. The decrease in threshold voltage is considered to be due to the longer electron mean-free path.
