An optical pulse train with a repetition rate in the gigahertz range has been successfully generated by an FM fiber ring laser that uses an optical circulator and a fiber grating for frequency filtering. The FM laser generates optical output with maximum chirping rate of more than 1.3×10^<21> Hz/s under intracavity phase modulation at 3.3 GHz. By shifting the frequency filtering window of fiber grating, the pulse repetition rate can he doubled, and optical pulses with a repetition rate of 6.6 GHz rate are obtained.
