Geometrical Interpretation of the Interfacial Energy between bcc and fcc Lattices and Preferred Orientation Relationship of the Epitaxy

For the numerical calculation of the interfacial energy between (111)_<fcc> and (110)_<bcc> planes by Gotoh and Arai, a geometrical interpretation based on the atomic structure is presented. The relationships of Nishiyama-Wassermann (N-W) and Kurdjumov-Sachs (K-S) are explained by the configuration of bcc and fcc atoms whose atomic diameter ratio α-takes specific values. For combinations of bcc and fcc lattices with α close to those specific values, the N-W or the K-S relationship will also be realized by forming a domain structure. A prediction of the preferred orientation of epitaxy is given for various combinations of fcc-bcc metals.
