Fabrication of Proton-Exchanged High-Index LiNbO_3 Waveguides Using m-Toluic Acid

High-index optical waveguides have been fabricated from lithium niobate (LiNbO_3) using a simple proton-exchange process. In this study, proton-exchanged planar optical waveguides have been fabricated from z-cut LiNbO_3 using a new proton source: m-toluic acid. These waveguides were characterized optically and the refractive index was found to vary with depth of waveguides. The variation of the refractive index exhibited a graded index profile with the maximum surface index change Δn = 0.14 measured at a wavelength of 0.633 μm. The diffusion constant D_o and the activation energy Q for the proton-exchange process were measured to be 2.35 × 10^8 μm^2/h and 75.63kJ/mol, respectively.
