Several bis (benzylidene) cycloalkanone derivatives have been synthesized. From reflection measurement in powder form, it is found that some of them show intense phase-matchable second harmonic generation (SHG). In particular, the SHG in 2,5-bis (4-methylbenzylidene) cyclopentanone is found to be 30 times as intense as that of urea. The cutoff wavelengths are below 430 nm. It is also shown that these compounds are not only highly stable, but also have a very high damage threshold against laser illumination.
