In an insulator with a backing electrode, negative surface leaders appear under ac voltage in air. When a hollow-type electrode is used, the negative surface leader is almost eliminated. With optimal size of the hollow for elimination, the number of generated negative leaders is at least 1/100 less than that in the electrode without a hollow at 40 kV_p. An increase in flash over voltage is also observed when the hollow electrode is used.
