Low-Temperature Annealing Effect on Superconducting and Structural Properties of Ion-Irradiated Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_x Crystals

Samples of a highly textured 15 μm-thick Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_x polycrystalline layer have been irradiated with 180 MeV Cu^<11+> ions perpendicularly to the surface of the layer. Upon irradiation the intragrain J_c values of the superconducting material are increased but the critical temperature T_c values are depressed. To investigate the influence of stress induced on the crystal structure by irradiation defects, annealing of the irradiated samples at 573 K for 12 hours has been performed. After annealing, a partial recovery of the T_c and J_c values of unirradiated samples is obtained. Residual defects have been observed by high-resolution electron microscopy. It is shown that the amorphous material found in the columnar defects before annealing has partially recrystallized.
