High-track-density recording has been investigated using a phase-change optical disk. Crosstalk was measured as a function of track pitch. Crosstalk of less than -26 dB was obtained at the track pitch of 1.0 μm using a red laser diode, an objective lens of large numerical aperture and a thin substrate. Amorphous marks were observed by transmission electron microscopy, and it was found that the width of amorphous marks remains on the order of the groove width even at high recording power, though the length increases with the increase of the recording power.
