Polarization-dependent infrared absorption spectra in the wavenumber range of 3200-10000 cm^<-1> have been measured in undoped barium titanate to obtain theoretical estimates of the hydrogen ion concentration and the activation energy of hydrogen ion migration. These values are compared with the holographically determined ones for nonphotoactive and mobile ionic species that fix (screen) the electronic hologram. The result indicates that hydrogen ions are considered to be the most likely species responsible for fixing volume holograms.
