A periodic layered structure laser is newly proposed. One period of the structure consists of two types of layers: one is for transparent electrode (or an insulator layer) and the other is for a laser medium which contains luminescence centers. Laser pumping is produced by electron impact excitation using carrier electrons accelerated by an externally applied ac or dc voltage through a pair of transparent electrodes. The electromagnetic waves in the laser medium are dealt with using the Kronig-Penny model. The reflectivity and transmittivity of the laser medium are calculated around the Bragg frequency. The minimum threshold gain is obtained at the Bragg frequencies. On the basis of the rate equations analogous to the gass phase laser, the minimum number of accelerated electrons required for the population inversion and the over all efficiencies are estimated.
