A method for measuring the overall quality of radiographic images by means of a sequential dependency is presented. In order to relate the quantitative measurements calculated by the sequential dependency to the perceived quality of radiographic images, the term "recognizability" is used. Recognizability is expressed by the degree to which an image can be visually recognized from the points of view of uniformity, symmetry, sharpness and structure. Applications of the method for evaluating radiographic films and for comparing normal and abnormal tissues of esophageal lumen are discussed. The measurements indicate a good agreement between theoretical and visual results.
