Three digital methods, the Blackman-Tukey (B-T) technique, the fast Fourier transform (FFT) technique, and the maximum entropy method (MEM), for determination of the Wiener spectrum or radiographic screen-film systems, are described. The spectral resolutions or these three methods are compared quantitatively by the entropy approach. By this approach, the resolution associated with the fluctuation and gradient of the measured spectra can be calculated. The results indicate that the MEM and B-T spectra convey almost the same amounts of transmitted information and transmit somewhat greater amounts than the FFT spectrum does. It is noted that the MEM technique extracts the same information from considerably shorter data samples compared with the other two methods. As a result, one may conclude that the MEM is the best method among the three for measuring the Wiener spectrum.
