Dielectric, piezoelectric and optical properties were investigated at room temperature for hot-pressed and ordinarily fired ceramics in a ternary system of Ba(Ca_<1/3>Nb_<2/3>)O_3-PbZrO_3-PbTiO_3 A phase diagram, dielectric constants and electromechanical coupling factors are shown. Optical transmittances higher than 65% at 600 nm were observed for polished thin plates (0.25 mm thick). Also, large electrooptic coefficients (linear (r_c) and quadratic (R)) were measured for specimens with compositions near the morphotropic boundary between tetragonal and rhombohedral phases. The overall characteristics of the present material were found to resemble those of PLZT.
