Long Time Range Breakdown Due to Field Distortion in PET Film Subjected to Step Voltage

When a relatively low step voltage was applied to a PET film, the breakdown time lags were normally distributed in the minute range. The mean time lag at a field strength of 4.5 MV/cm, as an example, was 451 seconds at 25℃, 185 seconds at 40℃ and 79 seconds at 60℃, respectively. The periodic reversal of the polarity of the applied field increased the mean time lag, although it had an effect on breakdown during the respective first several seconds. These and other experimental results suggest that the breakdown was brought about by a field distortion due to the formation of a space charge in the PET subjected to a step voltage for a long period.
