An optical fiber thermo-sensor utilizing the temperature dependence of the energy gap (E_8.) of GaP is proposed. The absorption-edge wavelength of GaP is about 550 nm, and its temperature shift is less than that of the GaAs or CdTe use din previous studies, suggesting that a sensor using GaP will be compatible even with plastic fibers and have a wide dynamic range with respect to temperature. Sensors made from Zn-doped or epitaxially-grown GaP were also investigated with the aim of obtaining a broaderdynamic range and higher sensitivity to temperature. The response time and measurement accuracy of the trial sensorwere 2 s and within ±1℃, respectively. A local network system with a ring-configuration is demonstrated as an application of the sensor.
