The kinetics of the structural change accompanying subtransition in hydrated dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine has been studied using X-ray diffraction methods. Following incubation at 1.5℃, the L'_β phase transformed to a more stable phase. The repeat period of the lamellar structure and the interchain spacing shifted continuously from 62.5A and 4.18A to 58.9A and 4.38A with time. At no periods of transformation could the coexistence of the L'_β) phase and the more stable phase be observed. These observations suggest that the transformation does not follow a two-state transition with first-order kinetics.
