The excitation of the electron plasma wave in a magnetized plasma (the Trivelpiece-Gould wave) is studied experimentally, using a slow waveguiding circuit surrounding the plasma column. The wave vector of the excited wave can be controlled externally. In the case of weak inhomogeneity, the group velocity v_g of the excited wave makes a right-angle with the phase velocity v_<pk> In the lower branch of the wave (ω<ω), the wave propagates as a forward wave in the axial direction and as a backward wave in the radial direction. In the upper branch (ω>ω), it propagates as a backward wave in the axial direction and as a forward wave in the radial direction.
