A method for producing a step-like change in a magnetic field has been developed. The apparatus used consists of two magnetically coupled superconducting magnets and two superconducting switches, and a sharp step-like transition of the magnetic field is produced in the magnets by operating the switches alternately. The magnets are in the persistent-current mode, and no power supply is required to keep the fields constant. A step-magnetic-field change of 2.1 T is obtained in a time interval of less than a second without any instability. The maximum rate of the change was estimated to be about 10 T/s, which is limited by the low normal resistance and slow thermal response of the superconducting switches. The change rate can easily be increased by more than two orders of magnitude when the characteristics of the switches are improved. The present method is especially useful for obtaining a large and rapid change in the strong magnetic field.
