The evaporation products of BaO heated on a coiled platinum filament have been studied using a quadrupole mass spectrometer while suppressing the reducing reactions in the BaO source. The ion current ratio of Ba^+ to BaO^+ was 0.60±0.04, and it was independent of the BaO source temperature. The appearance potential of BaO^+ was nearly the same as the ionization energy of BaO, while the appearance potential of Ba^+ was nearly equal to the sum of the ionization energy of Ba and the dissociation energy of BaO. These observations showed that most of the observed Ba^+ ions resulted from the dissociation of BaO by electron impact in the ionization chamber of the mass spectrometer. The proportions of Ba and BaO in the evaporation products from the actual cathodes were estimated using the ratio 0.60, and the values obtained were reasonable.
