Measurements of Backscattered Electron Energy from CRT Shadow Mask Coatings by Calorimetric Method

A calorimetric method is developed for measuring the total energy of the backscattered electrons from the coatings of a CRT shadow mask. We measured the energy from the heater input power in order to maintain thermal equilibrium between the sample under the electron bombardment and the cooled black wall. Measurements were carried out on the coatings of Bi2O3 and Fe3O4. About 21% of the incident primary energy was carried away by the backscattered electrons for Bi2O3 and 11% for Fe3O4. These values agree with the previously reported values obtained by the retarding potential method.
