Diffusive propagation profiles of heat pulses in vitreous silica have been measured at 2.3 K. The observed peak arrival times vary linearly with the propagation distance, which is different from the pure diffusion propagation observed in the presence of elastic scattering sites. Our results suggest that the high energy phonons injected into the glass propagate under the influence of elastic scattering (Rayleigh scattering) and anharmonic decay. The experimental results qualitatively agree with the theoretical study of the transport properties of high frequency phonons.
