Electrical and Optical Properties of Conducting Polymer-Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Composite

Conducting polymer-ferroelectric liquid crystal composites have been prepared for the first time. Properties of composites depend strongly on the combination of ferroelectric liquid crystal and conducting polymer. Characteristic ferroelectric properties have been found in these composites. Contributions of both the Goldstone mode and soft mode have been observed in the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant of the composite. Sporttaneous polarization decreases markedly with increasing concentration of conducting polymer above about 10%, which is explained by taking the microstructure of the composite and a percolation model into consideration. Electrooptic effects such as the transient scattering mode have also been found.
