Hexagonal boron nitride-aluminum nitride (50-50 wt%) ceramic composites were synthesized by means of uniaxial hot pressing with variation in the starting materials of boron nitride. The bulk density and the anisotropy of thermal conductivity, thermal expansion coefficient and Vickers hardness, decrease with decreasing particle size of boron nitride. It is concluded that the densification of the composites is dominated by the sintering of aluminum nitride and boron nitride impedes the sintering of aluminum nitride.
