Bulk samples containing nanometer-sized iron particles in a silica glass matrix have been prepared by hot pressing sol-get derived precursor powders subjected to reduction treatment. All samples exhibit metallic behaviour. The resistivity variation as a function of temperature in the range of 80 to 340 K shows a phonon softening effect in these ultrafine particles.
