Microscopic observation on the evaporating crystal surfaces of stearic acid have been observed by the electron microscope replica method. Solution-grown stearic acid single crystals were evaporated in a vacuum at room temperature. Two kinds of crystal surfaces were observed; as-cleaved and as-grown surfaces. The typical evaporation patterns were disc-shaped holes originating from some surface defects, evaporation pits originating from the emergent ends of dislocations on the surfaces, and steps from the high-cleavage stps. These evaporation steps have been correlated with the characterization of the crystal surfaces.
