According to the process of preparation fused quartz is classified into three types: electric-melting, flame-fusing and synthetic fused quartz, Viscosity is determined by the beam-bending and the fiber-elongation method, the former being the measurement of the sagging rate of a linear specimen. For synthetic fused quartz which contains more hydroxyl than the other types, viscosity is varied with time at high temperatures even if the specimens have been annealed completely. This viscosity change is investigated from the point of view of hydroxyl decrease by infra-red absorption and electron diffraction. It is evident that excess hydroxyl in synthetic fused quartz decreases with increasing time at high temperatures and α-cristobalite is crystallized on its surface. It is suggested that a more exact value of viscosity will be obtained from the beam-bending than the fiber-elongation method for the excess-hydroxyl-containing fused quartz such as synthetic one.
