It has been observed that new thermite reactions become possible by using refractory metals such as niobium, tantalum or titanium. Besides the significantly greater heat of reaction, the new thermite systems are characterized by a much lower kindling temperature than the conventional thermites if sufficiently fine powders of metals and oxides are used. The following details of the reactions have been examined; (a) the nature of the reaction products by X-ray structure analysis, (b) the released heat by calorimetric measurement, and (c) the variation of the ignition temperature with the composition of thermite mixtures. As one of the promising applications of these new thermite reactions, the welding of copper rods was successfully carried out.
