The formation of several intermediate oxides of niobium, produced in the course of transformation γ-Nb_2O_5 ⇾ α-Nb_2O_5 and the reaction Nb_2O_5+Nb ⇾ NbO_2, has been studied by X-ray diffraction. The structure transformation γ ⇾ α is accomplished by a passage through two intermediate stages, γ' and β. The γ'form is a new niobium oxide, interpreted to have a monoclinic lattice with parameters a=7.34_8Å, b=5.96_2Å,c=13.64_6Å and β=115°30'. The γ-form has been considered hitherto to be a pentoxide having 12Nb_2O_5-molecules in its elementary lattice. The helium method of density measurement showed, however, two possibilities for the composition of the γ-form. These are either a pentoxide which has 14Nb_2O_5-molecules in its elementary lattice or Nb_<28>O_<69>(NbO_<2.464>). The form II, which we have observed in the transformation Nb_2O_5 ⇾ NbO_2 and reported in our previous publication, is confirmed to be Nb_<12>O_<29>(NbO_<2.417>).
