The mechanical behavior of crystalline polymers is investigated by taking into account a folded chain structure of crystallite. The retardation spectrum is calculated with the aid of the normal coordinate method. It is assumed that energy dissipation occurs only on the surface of the crystallite. The spectrum is nearly flat because of the predominantly two-dimensional nature of vibration and is considered to correspond to the grain boundary dispersion of crystalline polymers such as polyethylene.
