A theory is presented for the phenomenon of the rotatory motion of solid dielectric in static electric field which was discovered by Sumoto. By considering that the rotation is caused by the interaction of the interfacial polarization between the rod and surrounding medium with the applied electric field, the analytical condition for the occurrence of rotation is given. Based upon a simplifying assumption, equations are derived which connect the angular velocity of rotation and the current increment caused by the rotation with the intensity of applied electric field. They agree qualitatively with experiments.
