The twisting of lamellae in polymer spherulites is considered to arise from the stress developing on the flat surfaces of lamellae due to the folding of the chain molecules at the surfaces. The residual surface stress increases the free energy of a lamella and the lamella will undergo a slight twist in order to minimize the total free energy of the system. Based upon this consideration a formula is derived which connects the repeat period of twisting with the thickness of lamella.
