Measurements of the microwave impedance of n-type InSb in the breakdown region, using a new technique, show a decrease and finally saturation of the impedance with increasing current, for sufficiently strong longitudinal or transverse magnetic fields. The saturation and the emission of microwave radiation were observed to occur for the same conditions of current and field. When no microwave emission was observed, because of a small or zero magnetic field, the impedance monotonically decreased with increasing current. Measurements were made using two K-band waveguides, with the sample passing through both. The phase of the emitted radiation coming form the two halves of the crystal was compared, and it was concluded from the measurements that both a phase-sensitive component (which is in phase in the two halves of the sample) and a phase-insensitive component are present.
