The dislocation double trails and elongated loops of edge, 60°, or screw character have been observed in deformed germanium crystals by transmission electron microscopy. The observations of the dislocations were made both on the primary slip plane and on the planes perpendicular to the slip plane. Formation of vacancies during deformation is confirmed from the observed spiral turns of screw dislocations and from the observed climbing of portions of edge dislocations. The formation of screw dislocation trails and loops is explained on the basis of the interaction between 60° dislocations and vacancies.
