Computations and experiments on the stability of a feedback control system for maintaining a plasma column in equilibrium are described. The time response of the displacement of the plasma to the desired position is examined by solving the equation of motion of the plasma column. We show that the stability of the feedback control system is improved by using an additional term which represents the shift velocity of the plasma column.
