Thermoluminescence (TL) and ESR studies were made on X- or y-irradiated glassy and hexagonal GeO_2. of high purity. An almost axially symmetric ESR signal with g_11=2.O02 and g-1=1.994, which is assigned to the singly charged oxygen vacancies by Weeks and Purcell, was usually detected. Those irradiated samples showed TL during warm-up. Correlation between TL and ESR signal intensities for the crystalline powder showed that the thermal treatment at 1000℃ in vacuo gave rise to the strong electron traps on the surface of powder particles. Photo- and/or secondary electrons generated during irradiation are considered to be competitively captured by the oxygen vacancies, surface traps and TL centers.
