The adsorption state of hydrogen on tungsten surfaces has been studied by using tungsten fine powder and by measuring the NMR of protons. The proton resonance line observed in the temperature range between 350 and 500 K is of composite structure. The line has been analysed by computer simulation and resolved into two component lines which have different line widths and Knight shifts. The shifts have been found to be 0.0008±0.0002 and -0.006±0.002%. The width of the line with the 0.0008% shift decreases noticeably as temperature is raised. This decrease is attributed to the surface migration of hydrogen adatoms whose apparent activation energy is found to be 2.7±0.5 kcal/mol. It is proposed that there exist two different adsorption states which are different in the orbital hybridization of the Is state of the hydrogen adatom with the 5d and 6s bands of tungsten.
