Adsorbed states of H on Cu surfaces have been studied by measurements of the NMR line width and the Knight shift of the proton and ^63Cu using fine Cu powder. The line width of the proton decreases with increase of temperature from 0.4 Gauss at 120 K to 0.06 Gauss at 300 K.This decrease is attributed to the surface migration of hydrogen adatoms, of which the activation energy is found to be 2.0±0.3 kcal/mol. The Knight shift of the proton is 0.0094±0.0005%. The relation between the electronic nature of adsorption bond and the proton Knight shift is discussed. It is concluded that 4s conduction electrons participate. in chemisorption of H on Cu surfaces. NMR results of ^63Cu are the same as bulky copper.
