Dielectric relaxation and steady flow viscosity measurements were carried out on solutions of poly (vinyl acetate) in toluene at concentrations from 0 to 70(g/dl) of the polymer. The relationship between the apparent activation energy for the dielectric relaxation process, ΔH_d, and that for the viscosity, ΔH_η, is given by ΔH_d + βwδp/δ(1/RT) = ΔH_η + E in moderately concentrated solution and ΔH_d + [η]wδp(1/RT) = ΔH_η + E in dilute solution, where w is the concentration expressed by weight-percent of the polymer, ρ the density of the solution, [η] the limiting viscosity number, and E the height of the potential barrier for the segmental motion of the polymer. It is proposed that β is a parameter representing the dimensions of the polymer chain in moderately concentrated solution.
