Lamb-Shift Polarized Ion Source with Spin Filter

A Lamb-shift polarized ion source with the spin filter has been constructed. A maximum tensor polarization of 55% has been obtained for deuterium negative tons. A negative ion current of more than 100 nA was obtained at the exit of the source. The tensor polarization of the beam was examined by accelerating the ions up to about 100 keV and by detecting the neutron asymmetry in the Γ(d,n)^4 He reaction. It was demonstrated that a pure vector polarized deuteron beam could be produced by the source.
