We describe the beam divergence of the intense ion source with a view toward its application to the neutral beam injection heating of toroidal plasmas in thermonuclear fusion research. In such a system the area of the extraction electrode is, unlike other sources, generally quite large with multi-aperture, and the total beam divergence is determined by a couple of factors, i.e. the divergence of the beam element and the size of the extraction electrode. We discuss the effect of these factors in injecting a larger fraction of the beam into the target without using focusing lens and suggest a direction of improvement for the future injectors.
