The construction of a machine for recording the tensile stress-strain relation of filamentary specimens is presented, and the procedures and results are described for the case of testing metal whiskers. The apparatus is composed of an analytical balance with a specimen suspended from one of the arms, a solenoid-magnet system attached to other arm for loading the specimen, and an optical lever which converts the specimen displacement into the unbalance of photocurrents of two photo-multipliers using a grating and lens system. The unbalance current and the current in the solenoid are fed to an X-Y recorder to trace the load-elongation curve. The reliabilities of the load and displacement measurements are few milligrams and 0.05 microns, respectively, while the measurable ranges are few grams and 70 microns. The tensile machine appears to be convenient for precise recording of the elastic range of the stress-strain curves of whisker crystals.
