Stability of Travelling Wave Oscillation with Arbitrary Intensity in Ring Lasers

The gain functions for simultaneous oscillation of the two counter rotating travelling waves in ring lasers are derived, where the intensity of one wave is arbitrary but the other is infinitesimally small. These expressions are used to discuss the stability of the travelling wave oscillation only in one direction. For lines with no Doppler broadening such a wave is always stable. When the broadening is large, it is stable only for weak oscillation with small detuning or for extremely high intensity oscillation.
