Selenide and telluride films of mercury formed from vapour phase on single crystals and also on amorphous substrates were studied by electron diffraction. These deposits having cubic structure grew epitaxially on single crystals sometimes even at room temperature with appropriate orientations conforming to the substrate structure and temperature. Thicker deposits always developed 1-d {111} orientation on all substrates. New hexagonal phases of these two deposits were also observed on single crystal substrates, higher temperature, however, favouring these new phases. Additional {115} and {211} orientations due to {111} twinning observed on some faces and also the formation of the hexagonal phases were ascribed to the faults associated with the growth of deposits.
