The calculations for the single scattering of gamma-rays were made on the case where the surface density gauge was placed on the boundary between two materials of different densities. The calculations and experiments were performed for the boundary perpendicular to the gauge axis and for that perallel to the gauge axis under various gauge configurations. The manner of response to the boundary varied with the source-detector separations μ_0ρD which is expressed in mean free path of incident rays and with the solid angle of incidence of the gamma-rays. When the value of μ_0ρD and the difference between the densities of two materials were small, the response to the boundary nearly took the shape of a tnnit step function.
