It has been already reported by other investigators that generally the ignition limits for a hydrocarbon-air mixture consist of two regions, namely region of cool flame and of hot ignition, respectively. The so-called second-stage ignition between these two regions has an inverse S-form in a pressure-temperature diagramm. These ignition limits were hitherto explained by means of the theory of chain reaction. In this investigation, however, by measuring the probability of the hot ignition and of the cool flame reaction behind reflected shock waves, the same ignition limits for a n-heptane-air mixture were obtained. Following this observation, it is presumed that generally many different reactions can take place in the ignition and one of them appears if its probability is great and its developing time short enough. Thus, it is suggested, that the existence of such ignition limits does not prove that some chain reaction take place, but that the theory of gas kinetics is adequate to explain the observed phenomena.
